COLLECT:

Almighty God, you are always more ready to hear than we are to pray and to give more than we either desire or deserve: pour down upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid and giving us those good things which we are not worthy to ask but through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ, your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

READINGS FOR TODAY:

Romans 12:9ff (page 1139)
Exodus 3:1-15
Matthew 16:21ff (page 984)

Today's gospel reading contains one of Jesus' less cosy sayings! "If anyone would follow me let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me." I don't know about you but there are other sayings that I prefer. People have interpreted it in many ways, denying themselves comfort, assuming he is only talking to the original disciples or ignoring it completely. But the gospels do not waste a word, in my experience, and so there has to be something important in there about how we should love him and LIVE, We'll explore that together this morning before going to eat lunch together in a dry tent in a wet garden! Happy September! It is good to be back.

Please pray for:

Children in special need of prayer:

Beau and Flynn, Elizabeth, Joey, Megan, Oliver Bennett

For children from whom God's love & salvation is concealed out of the negligence or short-sightedness of their elders. For our youth church reconvening from next Saturday, that new members will join us as they begin secondary school.

Please pray for the sick and those in need of comfort:

Beryl Tacey, Blaise, Bob Jarrett, Brenda Hobbs, Brian Branch, David Baker, David Coleman, David Reeve, Gill Powell, Gordon Kemp, Honor McKichan, Jazz, Jim Rumins, Joanne Pawlett, John Ramsbotham, Lancy Boniface, Linda Hirons, Pat Milner, Pat Streeton, Paul Branch

For all who are sick or afraid & for those who care for them & worry about them. For those facing their own deaths or those of people they love. That all will realise the passionate love of God for them.

Please give thanks for the lives of those who have died recently & for all who mourn their passing:

Alan Dent, Irene Lister, Pat Edwards

Thank ourGod that the good news of the gospel brings real hope for all of us beyond death & the promise of a new order in earth & heaven.

Give thanks for the lives and legacies of those in the year's mind:

Malcolm Overton, Audrey Herne, Ian Rowley, Eric Thorp, Mick Kenney, Phyllis Clarke, Barrie Thompson, Susan Hambridge

For all those who mourn and whose grief, old or new, God sees & brings His peace. In the power of the spirit we give thanks for those who we have loved who now know Jesus face to face.

Please pray for our clergy and lay ministers:

For all who are called to try to convey the love of Christ to the world, flawed and imperfect as they always are. For our Bishops, Donald and John ; for team clergy , Michael, Nigel, Dawn and Sarah and for John and Rene Stevenson travelling around South Africa. For Rev Mary and Bob Garbutt preparing to come to the Staverton Group. For Anne Parker-Tyler as she prepares to be licensed as Lay Reader later this month.

For those in our community:

For all who so desperately need to know God's grace and who do not realise it.

For the work of our churches:

That we may be renewed in the power and conviction of the Holy Spirit and ongoing so that we may see a great move towards God through his partner, the church.
